The Sabah State Education Department recently granted Sekolah Menengah Advent Goshen, Kota Marudu, commonly known as Goshen Adventist Secondary School, a star recognition through the Private Education Institutions Quality Standard assessment with a 4-star achievement. This success qualified SMAG to receive a certificate of recognition and Excellence School Award during the Private Education Appreciation Ceremony for the Sabah State Education Department, held at the Hotel 7 Suria Ballroom, Kota Kinabalu on 30 October 2024.
Accepting the award was school principal Roimon Kumin. He also received the 4-star Recognition Certificate signed by the Director General of the Ministry of Education Malaysia. Sekolah Menengah Advent Goshen was one of four private schools to get the excellence award, with Maktab National Kota Kinabalu, Sekolah Menengah Visi Tawau, and Sekolah Menengah Swasta As-salam Sandakan.
In an interview with principal Roimon, he stated that SMAG was chosen to participate in the 2023 Private Education Institution Quality Standard (SKIPS) assessment, which is a national-level review of private schools in Malaysia. SMAG was chosen after a rigorous process overseen by Malaysia’s Ministry of Education (MOE), which includes evaluations of school management methods and academic achievement. The school received a remarkable school management standard rating of 94%. This milestone qualified SMAG for further evaluation under the Private Education Institution Quality Standard Rating Assessment 2024.
SMAG received a 4-star certification after scoring an excellent 89.3% on the quality standards evaluation. This achievement demonstrates SMAG’s commitment to excellence across 15 categories, including Quality of Teaching and Learning, as evidenced by the evaluation of academic programs aligned with MOE standards. This demonstrates a curriculum that promotes student involvement and success.
SMAG’s excellent performance was mostly due to the Student Achievement criterion. SMAG’s consistent success in the SPM tests over three years resulted in a Grade Point Average (GPS) of less than 5, exceeding the JPN’s (Sabah State Education Department) objective performance threshold. This achievement elevates SMAG to the highest-performing secondary school in the Kota Marudu district. Finally, the management and leadership criterion displayed by the school’s leadership team consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to effective management practices.
This success reveals our institution’s strengths and commitment to providing superior education in the country. The Ministry of Education’s acknowledgment of the school instills pride in the school and its community, as well as a desire for continual improvement and excellence.
Principal Roimon thanked God for these successes, which mark a significant milestone in the school’s pursuit of educational excellence. He further stated that this achievement is a source of pride for the school, the Sabah Mission, and the Kampung Goshen community. In closing, he shared, “This recognition exhibits the dedication of the school’s staff, students, and stakeholders to advancing educational standards.”
