The Penang Adventist Hospital (PAH) celebrated a momentous milestone on December 12, 2024, marking 100 years of dedication to healthcare and community service. From its modest origins as a small mission clinic to becoming a thriving multispecialty hospital, PAH\u2019s journey has been a testament to faith, perseverance, and a heartfelt commitment to serve others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The centennial celebration drew a diverse group of attendees, including dignitaries and church leaders from the Southern Asia-Pacific Division President Pr. Roger Caderma, Malaysia Union Mission President and Hospital Board Chair, Pr. Abel Bana, healthcare experts, community members, and valued partners. Among the distinguished guests was Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow, who complimented PAH\u2019s significant contributions to the state\u2019s reputation as a centre for medical excellence and a leader in medical tourism. In his speech, he also highlighted a recent achievement: PAH\u2019s recognition by Newsweek<\/em> as one of the Best Specialized Hospitals in the Asia Pacific for Orthopaedics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was more than a ceremony\u2014it was a heartfelt tribute to all who have shaped the hospital\u2019s remarkable legacy. The dedication of PAH\u2019s doctors, nurses, and staff took centre stage, with their relentless efforts in providing care and hope deeply appreciated. Gratitude was also extended to the community and patrons whose trust and encouragement have been the foundation of the hospital\u2019s growth. With each visit, pleasant words and statements of faith in PAH have enhanced the organization’s mission and legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the celebration, PAH welcomed back senior doctors, staff, and the family of its founder, Dr. Earl Gardner. These pioneers were honoured with a special luncheon filled with laughter, memories, and heartfelt connections. They also enjoyed a nostalgic tour of the hospital, reminiscing about its early days while marvelling at its progress and advancements in modern healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beginning\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The celebration opened with captivating performances, including a one-of-a-kind sand art performance honouring the establishment of the medical ministry on the island of Penang. Dr Gardner’s granddaughter, Ms. Candace Horsley was given the honours to finish the presentation by writing 100 to commemorate the centenary celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally located at 108 Muntri Street, the Seventh-day Adventist Mission Clinic was established on December 12, 1924, by American missionary Dr. J. Earl Gardner as Malaysia’s first Seventh-day Adventist clinic. Driven by a goal to help the impoverished, Dr. Gardner’s clinic had a sign that stated “Poor Treated Free,” demonstrating his commitment to giving medical care to all, regardless of financial means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, the hospital has extended its buildings and services to accommodate the community’s rising healthcare requirements. It relocated to its current home on Burmah Road in 1931, where it operated as the Penang Sanitarium and Hospital. Despite hardships, including occupation during World War II, the hospital remained committed to its goal, changing names numerous times before becoming Penang Adventist Hospital (PAH) in 1967.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PAH has achieved significant milestones, including the establishment of the Heart Centre in 1987, the first in the northern region to undertake a coronary bypass operation successfully. In 1993, the hospital established the Adventist College of Nursing and Health Sciences, demonstrating its dedication to healthcare education and workforce development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Present, and Beyond<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the celebrations continued, Dr. Gardner’s great-grandson, Mr. Torvald Aagaard, spoke on behalf of his family, sharing memories about his great-grandparents’ incredible achievements. He expressed immense gratitude and respect for unselfish devotion, saying, “I wonder what they could have imagined when they started their clinic on Muntri Street with the bold sign ‘poor treated free.'” I wonder whether they could picture a century in the future being so well-deservedly celebrated. He concluded his statement by expressing how much his family valued the relationship with PAH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the event\u2019s highlights was the unveiling of PAH\u2019s most ambitious project yet: a state-of-the-art 19-story tower block that will increase its capacity with additional beds and advanced facilities. This expansion symbolizes PAH\u2019s commitment to delivering exceptional, compassionate, and innovative care, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a gesture of gratitude, every hospital employee was presented with a commemorative gold coin. This keepsake not only symbolizes appreciation for their hard work and dedication but also serves as a lasting reminder of their essential role in PAH\u2019s century-long journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The centenary celebration was filled with meaningful fellowship, cherished moments, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude. PAH CEO Albin Phua reflected on the occasion, stating, \u201cThis milestone is more than just a marker of time; it is a tribute to the enduring spirit of compassion and dedication that has defined the PAH journey over the last century.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 100-year anniversary celebration of Penang Adventist Hospital was indeed a meaningful occasion, honouring the past, celebrating the present, and looking forward to a promising future.
