At the 2024 Annual Council, held at the General Conference (GC) headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, church leaders emphasized the need for renewed spiritual commitment through the ongoing “Back to the Altar” initiative. This program, launched two years ago, calls for a return to daily family worship, prayer, and Bible study, addressing the spiritual challenges of modern life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ram\u00f3n Canals, GC Ministerial Director, spoke to the GC Executive Committee (EXCOM) on the importance of nurturing a personal relationship with God. \u201cThis is a divine call to come back to the altar, back to the Bible, and back to prayer,\u201d he stressed, highlighting the initiative\u2019s progress across the global church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this year’s Annual Council, two new resources were introduced to further support members and leaders in deepening their devotional practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Praise and Worship Bible: A Tool for Spiritual Revival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designed to enhance personal and family worship, the “Praise and Worship Bible<\/a>“\u2014produced in collaboration with Safeliz<\/a>\u2014features a leather-bound design and is structured to encourage daily interaction with Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Praise and Worship Bible embodies the heart of the Back to the Altar initiative,\u201d said Dwain Esmond, Associate Director of the Ellen G. White Estate, a key contributor to the initiative. \u201cIt encourages members to engage in meaningful daily worship and Bible study.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What sets this Bible apart is its unique integration of technology, blending traditional Bible study with modern digital tools to foster deeper spiritual engagement. The Bible offers 365 devotionals centered on different passages through scripture. Each passage is paired with five targeted devotionals\u2014one for each of four specific age groups (children, teens, youth, and adults) and another drawing from Ellen G. White\u2019s writings related to the passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These devotionals are accessible through QR codes, allowing families or individuals to choose the devotional that best fits their spiritual journey. This multi-layered approach provides an inclusive devotional experience, encouraging family worship while offering content tailored to different age groups and spiritual maturity levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to its devotional focus, there are over 200 QR codes that link to Scripture songs, specially produced to help readers memorize key verses. These songs provide a creative way to internalize Scripture, attempting to make memorization easier and more enjoyable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summing up its significance, Esmond emphasized, “This Bible is not just a study tool\u2014it’s a resource designed to create a habit of daily worship and Scripture engagement, helping families and individuals grow closer to God. It\u2019s about making God\u2019s Word the centerpiece of our lives.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back to the Bible: A Practical Guide to Scripture Memorization<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Back to the Bible<\/em> guide, authored by Dr. Ram\u00f3n Canals, offers a practical approach to Scripture memorization, a practice rooted in Adventist heritage. Inspired by pioneers like J.N. Andrews, known for memorizing large portions of the Bible, this resource outlines simple, effective methods for integrating Scripture into daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMemorizing Scripture has always been central to our spiritual tradition,\u201d noted Anthony Kent, GC Associate Ministerial Secretary. \u201cThis book is a vital tool to help both young and old reconnect with the Bible in a world filled with distractions.\u201d Back to the Bible<\/em> not only teaches methods of memorization but also encourages deeper reflection on scripture, making it a key resource in the Back to the Altar<\/em> initiative\u2019s goal of strengthening personal faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why This Initiative Matters<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Back to the Altar responds to concerning trends in Bible engagement among church members. While 49% of Adventists interact with the Bible daily\u2014better than the general population\u2014many do not engage with Scripture regularly. \u201cHalf of our members aren\u2019t having personal time with God,\u201d Canals emphasized, calling for continued focus on this initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All resources introduced at the Annual Council will be available on the Back to the Altar website, ensuring widespread access to these tools for spiritual growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the initiative expands, these resources will play a crucial role in helping Adventist families and individuals build a stronger foundation of faith through daily worship, prayer, and Bible study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
