COMMLab 2025 Empowers Church Members to Use Technology for Ministry

From August 1 to 3, 2025, a special training called Communication Laboratory, or COMMLab, was held at the Bintulu Seventh-day Adventist Church. It was organized by the Sarawak Mission Communication Department to help church members from the Northern Region learn how to use modern tools for ministry. COMMLab began in 2024, started by the Southern Asia-Pacific Division, to give church members useful skills to support their churches and personal ministries in today’s digital world.

This year, 50 committed members joined the three-day training. The sessions were hands-on and easy to follow. One of the first lessons was on using Canva, a simple design app that helps create posters, banners, and slides for church events. Even those with no design experience were excited to learn that they could now make eye-catching materials on their own.

Another helpful session was led by Pastor Eric Sanjay Dingun, who taught participants how to create PowerPoint presentations for worship, youth programs, and special events. He gave tips on choosing good layouts, clear fonts, and meaningful pictures. Many said they now feel more confident when preparing slides and speaking in front of the church.

Participants also enjoyed a session on photography and video recording, led by Mr. Gibson Sumbang. They learned how to take clear, high-quality photos and videos using their phones. These skills will help when creating reports, posting updates on social media, or keeping a visual record of church events. Many were surprised by how much they could do with basic tools already in their hands.

Two more sessions were led by Pastor Chan Tin Loi. The first taught participants how to create official documents like letterheads and certificates using the correct format from the Sarawak Mission. The second session introduced how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and social media can support ministry. Pastor Chan showed how AI can help in planning and writing, and how social platforms can be used to share God’s message in a respectful and positive way.

Church leaders also came to support the event. Mr. Golden Gadoh, Communication Director of Malaysia Union Mission, reminded the group: “We must reach the unseen fields of God—our social media world. We are called to reflect a positive influence online so that others may see value in us.” Pastor Chan also shared, “We are living in a challenging world. We must focus more on our ministry and use skills and technology to spread God’s Word.” With these new skills and strong encouragement, participants left the training ready to serve better and become faithful communicators for Christ.

COMMLab 2025 was more than just a training program, it was an opportunity for church members to grow, connect, and prepare for greater service. Through practical lessons, teamwork, and spiritual encouragement, participants discovered how simple tools and new skills can make a big impact in sharing God’s message. As they return to their local churches, they carry not only new knowledge but also a renewed passion to serve as effective and faithful communicators for Christ in today’s digital world.
